Pillar #2- Tithing

Pillar #2- Tithing

Every tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the trees, is the Lord's; it is holy to the Lord.Leviticus 27:30

Tithing is simply giving back to God a portion (10%) of our earnings. In 2 Corinthians 9:7, we learn that God loves a cheerful giver. A generous heart should characterize our giving back to Him. I recently read about a family that was asked by the Lord to give $50,000. This was their entire income amount from the year before. They had no idea how they would be able to achieve this amount of money. But faithfully, they formulated a plan in order to fulfill the Lord’s request.

Wouldn’t you know that the family made double that amount that year and continued to make more and more money over the years. This family’s story shows that God provides in tremendous ways when we act in obedience.

“Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine.” Proverbs 3:9-10

Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.” Malachi 3:10

Science

Did you know that science backs up a benefit of tithing? Giving has the ability to release “feel-good” hormones such as dopamine, oxytocin and serotonin (the “Happiness Trifecta”). Giving produces an increase in the production of these three, creating not only personal joy, but improving overall health as well.

Dopamine - Creates a zest for life and is a key factor in motivation, concentration and libido.

Oxytocin - Affectionately called the “hug hormone”, it plays an important role in psychological stability, trust and relaxation. It has a significant impact on pro-social behavior.

Serotonin - Believed to play a key role in the central nervous system and is known as the “happy molecule." It helps regulate mood, sleep, appetite and memory and learning.

With these emotional, mental, and physical benefits, giving could be considered an incredible investment to your health and well-being.

Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.Proverbs 11:25

In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” Acts 20:35
